They say that when you buy a smartphone, you tend to stick with the same device maker or mobile operating system for the long haul. Looking back at my personal device history, I’ve gone from Symbian to Android to iOS to Windows Phone to iOS and then finally back to Android. You wouldn’t expect anything different from a phone geek, right? Microsoft knows normal people don’t often change their habits however, and according to Neowin the company is going to do something about that next week....

Analysts from security firm SEC Consult broke down firmware pictures for more than 4,000 models of inserted gadgets from more than 70 producers. In them they found more than 580 interesting private keys for SSH and HTTPS, a considerable lot of them shared between various gadgets from the same seller or even from distinctive ones. While relating those 580 keys with information from open Internet examines, they found that no less than 230 keys are effectively utilized by more than 4 million Internet-associated gadgets....

A few weeks after unveiling the international variant of MIUI 10, Xiaomi has released the first beta of the ROM for some of its compatible devices. The latest release of MIUI further improves system performance uses AI to bring features like portrait mode to its older devices with a single camera. Other notable new features in MIUI 10 include Progressive Web App support, improved Mi Browser with a new startup page, improved App Vault, and more....

Cellebrite, the mobile forensics company reportedly assisting the FBI to extract data from the iPhone in the San Bernardino case, has written a white paper noting that extracting the data is only part of the challenge. If law enforcement agencies are to be able to obtain convictions on the basis of that data, there are a lot of questions that have to be answered. At face value, it would seem that any compromised version of iOS that Apple was forced to create for the FBI would fail at least three of the four tests …...

Microsoft is today releasing its new iteration of Office, Office 2019, for Mac today. The main focus on the new version is solely tailored towards users and businesses that haven’t switched to the Office 365 subscription service. As reported by The Verge, the new version is essentially everything Office 365 has been offering over the past several years, packaged in a new version that’s available for a one-time fee. Office 2019 will include updates to Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel, Outlook, and the rest of the Office suite of applications....

A little while ago, we told you about Microsoft releasing the Windows RT Surface, its very interesting-looking tablet, on October 26th, the same date Windows 8 will be available. Microsoft is offering $44.6 billion to acquire Yahoo, but management there are stoutly resisting the offer, even though Microsoft is threatening to launch a proxy vote battle to see the current board replaced. Yahoo’s resistance is so strong, including an unusual ads sharing deal with Google, that now Ballmer may be considering how he can exit the deal without appearing a complete failure – in the week CNBC’s Jim Cramer called Windows “irrelevant”....

Midsomer Murders is a British detective drama that began in 1997. It’s based on Caroline Graham’s Chief Inspector Barnaby book series. It’s set in several villages within the fictional English county of Midsomer and is known for it’s occasional lightheaded jokes and moments of dark humor. Microsoft Edge, the web browser that replaced Internet Explorer with the release of Windows 10, has been given a dramatic overhaul in the last year or so to be rebuilt on the same Chromium source code that Google Chrome is based on. Today, the new version of Microsoft Edge, based on Google’s Chromium, has been officially launched on Windows and macOS. Late in 2018, Microsoft confirmed rumors that the company was rebuilding its Edge browser on Chromium, the open source base for Google Chrome....

The $92 million financing was led by FTX Venture and Three Arrows Capital, with the help of hedge fund Brevan Howard (and its co-founder and billionaire Alan Howard), Amber Group, Blockchain.com, Circle Ventures, Finality Capital Partners, Pantera, and five unnamed Mina backers. The proceeds from the credit raise will help finance grants to attract developers and drive Mina’s adoption as the leading zero-knowledge platform within Web3, the company said. “Our main goal right now is to give out grants to people who are doing effective work for Mina; this will help us do that much more effectively,” Mina Foundation CEO Evan Shapiro told ZDNet....

The guys behind Project Black Mirror have recorded brain wave activity with ECG pads, matched the incoming patterns to pre-saved digital patterns saved on a MacBook, then fed the matched commands to a speech synthesizer chip that translates the command to Siri....

You might think of the US as one of the most advanced mobile markets, but when it comes to mobile video quality, the country ranked #68 out 100 according to an Opensignal report… The firm says that in each of the 100 countries surveyed, it measured the average video experience of Opensignal users on 3G and 4G networks for each operator. It measured real-world video streams using three criteria: picture quality, video loading time, and buffering....

After several of the largest companies exhibiting at the show pulled out over the last week due to concerns over the coronavirus epidemic, GSMA has now announced that Mobile World Congress 2020 is officially cancelled… In an emailed statement to both Bloomberg and the Financial Times, CEO of GSMA John Hoffman said the outbreak has made it “impossible” to hold the event. “Global concern regarding the coronavirus outbreak, travel concern and other circumstances, make it impossible for the GSMA to hold the event,” he said....

But the tech giant Microsoft will soon present a rare news that will turn the table with its newly designed paint app. For several years (even many) the Paint tool maintained the same style along with the same features. Microsoft August Update It’s nothing impressive, mainly a lot of security and bug fixes for the OS, Office, and firmware updates for Surface tablets. Earlier it was speculated that this update would include a new Start menu that combines aspects of the new Modern UI and the traditional Start menu, but Microsoft decided to scrap that, and it will presumably be available in the next version of Windows, codenamed “Threshold” which is said to be launched early next year....

While hailing its own global Windows 11 deployment as a big success, even Microsoft didn’t manage to upgrade all of its PCs to Windows 11. The new operating system has stringent minimum hardware requirements, which, for example, require Trusted Platform Module 2.0 chipsets that aren’t present in older PCs. “Windows 11 has specific hardware requirements, and a percentage of our devices were not upgraded. The employees with these devices will continue to run Windows 10 in parallel and get a Windows 11 device at their next device refresh,” said Microsoft’s Lukas Velush in a blog post....
